Most breakdowns we get called out to were visible days earlier. Train operators to report these five and you will convert emergency downtime into scheduled work.
1. Slower lift or drift. A mast that creeps down under load points to worn seals or a failing cylinder — both cheap now, expensive later.
2. New noises under load. Whine from the hydraulic pump or knocking from the drive axle rarely improves on its own.
3. Steering play. More than a little slack at the wheel is a safety issue as much as a mechanical one.
4. Tyre chunking or flat spots. Worn tyres transmit shock into the mast and shorten the life of everything above them.
5. Battery or fuel consumption creeping up. A unit working harder for the same output is telling you something.
